As a pediatric dentist, we are often asked about using sealants on children. We believe they are very useful in prevention. First approved in 1976 by the ADA, they are highly effective in preventing tooth decay.
Studies show that molars that had been sealed still maintain protection of 70% after 15 years, whereas teeth not bonded only about 17% of surface was sound. We find sealants a good investment for children, as well as adults, in keeping teeth safe from decay.
How It Works
In order for the sealant to bond properly the tooth or teeth need to be cleaned. An acid is used to etch the teeth and that removes any foreign material. This makes the enamel to properly bond with the sealant resin which prevents bacteria from reaching the tooth and causing decay.
How Long does it take
The in-office process is fairly quick and can save you money as well as time in fillings and restorations. It is something we definitely encourage parents consider in a child’s dental care.
